2000-2003 History

Manulife Hong Kong

Canadian-based Manulife Financial has been conducting business in Hong Kong for more than one hundred years. Following is a brief chronology of the Company's history in Hong Kong.

 

20092007-2008, 2004 - 20062000 - 2003Before 2000

 2000 > Expansion into Mandatory Provident Funds market.
  > Manulife establishes its third landmark building, Manulife Provident Funds Place in Kowloon.
  > Launch of ManuChoice, the first group insurance plan to offer voluntary employee benefits coverage in Hong Kong.
> Re-affirmation of 'AA+' (Very Strong) credit rating by Standard & Poor's for MIL.
> Establishment of an Asian investment operation in Hong Kong.
> Manulife and The Chinese University of Hong Kong jointly offer a Certificate Program in Financial Planning and Management for Manulife agents.

 2001 > MIL wins the Business Excellence Award 2001 from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and the Top Service Award 2001 in the insurance category from Next Magazine.
  > Certificate of Merit awarded for Manulife's MPF Launch Campaign at the HKMA/TVB Award for Marketing Excellence 2001.
  > Introduction of a consolidated statement of the customer's complete financial portfolio.
> Launch of Employer and Employee Web sites for its Mandatory Provident Fund customers to manage their accounts and check fund balances.
> Re-affirmation of 'AA+' (Very Strong) credit rating by Standard & Poor's for MIL.
 
 2002 > MFD receives seven awards from Benchmark magazine and the South China Morning Post for the strong performance of four of its mutual funds across a range of sectors and countries.
  > MIL, in collaboration with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, offers Diploma Program in Financial Planning and Management for its insurance advisors.
  > MIL wins two awards - the "Challenge Cup- Overall Top Fund Raiser" and "Top Fund Raiser for the Hong Kong & Kowloon Walk " - in the Walks for Millions 2002 event organized by the Community Chest.
> MIL's subsidiary, Manulife-Sinochem, is granted approval to officially open its Guangzhou branch office. This is the first branch license granted by CIRC to a foreign invested joint-venture life insurance company in China.
> Reaffirmation of 'AA+' (Very Strong) credit rating by Standard & Poor's for MIL.
> Manulife Hong Kong's Web site, www.manulife.com.hk, wins the Web Care Award organized by the Internet Professionals Association (iProA), in recognition of its provision of barrier-free Internet service to everyone in the community.
> MIL wins two Next Magazine's Top Service Awards - third-time winner of Top Service Award in insurance company category and winner of the inaugural MPF service category.
> MIL receives the title of "Caring Company" from the Hong Kong
Council of Social Service (HKCSS), in recognition of its ongoing efforts in community involvement.

 2003 > Manulife Funds Direct renames Manulife Asset Management (Hong Kong) Limited.
  > Manulife Asset Management wins four awards from Benchmark magazine and the South China Morning Post for the outstanding performance of its mutual funds.
  > Manulife shares in the community's fight against SARS by donating HK$300,000 to "The Community Chest of Hong Kong - Operation UNITE Fund."
> MIL is the winner of the "Challenge Cup - Overall Top Fund Raiser" and "Top Fund Raiser of the Hong Kong and Kowloon Walk" awards in the Walks for Millions event organized by The Community Chest of Hong Kong.
> Employers rate Manulife top in overall satisfaction among MPF service providers in Hong Kong. Manulife came first in overall customer satisfaction in a survey conducted by ACNielsen from April to May 2003.
> MIL wins double recognition for top customer service - Company awarded Next Magazine's Top Service Award for both "Insurance Company" and "MPF Service" categories.
> The opening of Manulife University Asia in Hong Kong as an inhouse, region-wide training facility for Manulife's agency executives across the Asia region.
> Manulife expands its MPF product portfolio through the addition of two lifestyle funds with underlying investments managed by Fidelity Investments Management (H.K.) Ltd.
> MIL's subsidiary, Manulife-Sinochem, receives approval to establish its Beijing branch office.
> Manulife wins "Best Insurance Company" Award in Capital Magazine's Outstanding Information Technology & Financial Enterprise Awards.
