Manulife Financial bolsters its capital position

Manulife Financial Corporation reports third quarter results and Cdn$3 billion loan financing

TORONTO (Nov 7, 2008) - Manulife Financial Corporation (“MFC”) today reported quarterly shareholders' net income of Cdn$510 million and fully diluted earnings per share of Cdn$0.33, compared to net income of Cdn$1,070 million and fully diluted earnings per share of Cdn$0.70 for the same period last year.  The sharp declines in global equity markets reduced reported earnings in the quarter by Cdn$574 million and credit losses related to previously disclosed exposures and to credit downgrades totaled Cdn$253 million.  Return on common shareholders' equity was 8.2 per cent in the third quarter of 2008, compared to 18.9 per cent in 2007.

TORONTO (October 16, 2008) –Manulife Financial Corporation today announced that its Standard & Poor's credit ratings are unchanged, according to the bulletin titled "Manulife Financial Corp. Ratings Unchanged After Highlights On Third-Quarter Results," which was published by Standard & Poor's on October 14, 2008. The published bulletin states "Standard & Poor's believes that Manulife will continue to exhibit the ability to effectively navigate through these difficult times, given its excellent risk management practices and capacity to issue hybrids or achieve capital relief through reinsurance or re-arranging its balance sheet if it needs to further reinforce its capital position."
