Manulife Financial was one of the first Canadian life insurance companies to establish operations
in Japan as early as 1901. It reentered the market in 1999 through the establishment of a new joint
venture company with a Japanese insurer and under the name of Manulife Century. Manulife Century
subsequently became a fully owned subsidiary of Manulife Financial and on April 2, 2001, it acquired
the business of its partner company. On September 1, 2001, the Company changed its name to Manulife
Life Insurance Company, promoting a stronger link to Manulife Financial and launching a new brand
identity into the market. |
